Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
